By definition ESD is the build up of an electric charge in our body. This most commonly happens when walking over certain material (some carpets or rugs for example). This charge continues to build up in our bodies until it is grounded off or quickly neutralized by a discharge. This discharge usually occurs between two objects. In our case this discharge can happen when handling and installing a new memory module.

When handling computer components there is always a risk of damaging a computer or component with the constant build-up of static on our bodies. The internal components of a PC or laptop are very fragile and can be easily damaged by static electricity or the discharge effect.
