I bought a second hand Lenovo T61 to run Ubuntu (Linux) on. The specifications of the laptop only said 4GB max, but Ubuntu (sudo lshw|less) showed that the motherboard and memory controller could handle 8GB.

g.skill and sony had told me that my laptop would only go up too 4gb, i did not beleive them so i did my home work. it went into my sony vaio-vgn-fz38m without a problem, i have multi-boot of solaris 10, windows 7, windows 2008 r2 and ubuntu 9.10, these are all 64 bit, have yet to do my tests launching multiple virual machines but looks good.

Purchased this for my X61 tablet as upgrades. Install was a breeze and the modules are now humming alone nicely in my lappy. Boots up way faster then before. This is definitely an upgrade well worth purchasing if you laptop can take it.

Note that if you have a turbo memory module, make sure that it is removed as it doesn't help performance one bit once you have 8GB of RAM installed.
