32GB KingSpec 1.8" PATA/IDE SSD Solid State Disk (MLC)

I have bought for the 1st time from MemoryRC, the transaction was smooth, and the SSD was shipped promptly (ordered on thursday, shipped the next day, arrived in Belgium in my mailbox next monday), perfect. A nice and easy replacement for the old Hitachi HDD.
Placement was easy : you can find on Lenovo website a pdf describing the disassembling process (don't forget to take out the digitalizer pen). If done correctly, this is a drop in replacement.
The only problem is the double BEEP at boot (hard disk not verified by IBM for compatibility), as you can't turn it off in the BIOS setup.
I have tested Ubuntu 10.10 on this SSD (formatted in Ext4, with some tweaks limiting SWAP use and putting temp files in RAM, but you could try alternative file systems as ReiserFS), and this is a really fast and responsive laptop now, compared to a rather sluggish Windows XP Tablet edition. Boot times are really fast (several seconds, compared to probably 2 minutes until XP desktop), program loading times too. Recommended

On the plus side, my X40 boots and shuts down a lot faster, and the fan comes on a lot less often.

On the minus side, I haven't noticed any less power draw, and read/write is only slightly faster than the old Hitachi HDD, about 35 Mb/sec.

The main "worry" is that it did not fit easily at all into the IDE bus--i.e., it did not "guide in" as easily as the old Hitachi HDD, so one worry would be trashing the pins, and thus the whole unit . . . Hopefully I won't have to worry about that for a very long time!

The staff at Memoryc.com was wonderfully helpful in the process.

Bought this produkt as a replacement for the very slow default HDD. I must say that I am quite impressed by its performance and how easy it was to install. There is just one tiny issue, and thats the error message at startup, which just get skipped in the startup process.

Overall a great product..

I've bought this SSD as a drop-in replacement into my trusty Thinkpad X40 to give it some extra years of lifetime.

The drive is now mounted for two weeks now. It fits perfectly in the drive bay. Four screws are provided in case you don't want or can't use the original ones.

Compared to the original Hitachi Travel Star:

- completely silent, of course: no more loud clicks (heads parking)

- faster booting: to give an idea, with Ubuntu 10.10, it takes aroud 15 s from
the end fo the BIOS to the graphical login screen. From power on to graphical login
screen : around 21 s

- the overall experience is snappier

I don't feel there is a difference in battery lifetime or in heat dissipation.

So far, so good, so I would recommend this SSD for the Thinkpads X40 family. It is a little bit expensive compared to standard 2.5" SATA SSD, but I guess this is the drawback of a "niche" market: to my knowledge, it's the only 1.8" PATA SSD on the market.

I have been running this product -- which was promptly delivered from MemoryC.com -- in my IBM X40 notebook PC for around 3 days now.

The process I followed was as follows:

1. Remove old/original HD per Lenovo website instructions.
2. Remove old/original HD from "caddy" (metal housing with what appears to be a white paper/plastic-like layer on it). A bit fiddly, but easy-enough if you take care.
3. Insert new Kingspec SSD into "caddy". Easy.
4. Insert new Kinspec SSD "caddy" into IBM X40 drive bay per Lenovo instructions.
5. Attach optical drive to notebook via USB, and install Win XP Pro SP3.
6. Install Intel PRO 1000 Ethernet driver, collected from Lenovo site on another machine, from USB key-drive. Internet connection now possible.
7. Collect/install the rest of other key drivers from Lenovo site.
8. Performs "SSD friendly" OS tweaks per Google search.
9. Install programs.

I am very pleased with the results. In particular, boot-up time is now satisfyingly fast. Recommended product in my opinion.

I haved used these drives in both X40 and X41 togheter with Windows 7. It works perfect.

The only issue is that with the X41 there is a warning when booting (Error 2010). Lenovos fault not KingSpec.

Can really recommend this drive.

We had in company two X41 computers with malfunction HDD-s.
We gave up to repair them because of very high original spare parts costs.
This 32GB SSD was the best solution to bring them up to use and with very
good price!
Notice that this SSD higher read/write speed makes computer faster then it was before :)

Does what it says on the listing... Drops straight into my X41 Tablet, recognised no problem (although the BIOS gives a warning, presumably because it is not an official drive!). 20 minutes later Kubuntu 9.10 installed on the drive, boot times sub-15 seconds (after BIOS). Everything for normal just works. Now off to reconfigure all the tablet stuff :)

This 32GB SSD drive brought new life to my ThinkPad X40 (w/1.5GB RAM). Under Windows 7, this combination runs really well. I have always been very happy with the build quality of my X40, and the concept of a new SSD drive with a 4-5 year old notebook is a pretty amazing thing. The performance is fully up to par with current netbooks on the market today, if not better... MemoryC's service is as excellent as ever.

I have an aging Thinkpad X40 that's going strong, and since the 1.8" hard drive is the only real bummer about that machine, I was really stoked to find this product. I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 RC1 (installing from a USB drive), and now the X40 runs MUCH FASTER and SUPER QUIET with no hard drive noise. This SSD works as advertised - just drop it in and go.
